On the Big Island visit spectacular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Take in the spectacular views from a portion of the Crater Rim Drive and walk through Thurston Lava Tube. Explore the Hawaii Botanical Gardens, home to over 2,000 species of tropical plants. Tour the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and discover how macadamia nuts are harvested and processed for market. Or, journey to the highest peak of the Pacific - the 13,796-foot summit of Mauna Kea. Ancient Hawaiians considered the summit the abode of the Snow Goddess and buried high chiefs there. The Home of the Brave Museum exhibits WWII memorabilia. Or, explore Oahu's Pali Coast on a scenic drive that visits the Polynesian Cultural Center. Mark Twain wrote that viewing sunrise atop Haleakala was "the sublimest sight I ever saw." While visiting Maui travel to Haleakala National Park - not at sunrise, alas, - to view the massive crater, over seven miles long and three miles wide. The last eruption occurred in 1790, and today the crater floor is dotted with cinder cones and an astonishing range of vegetation. Every year humpback whales migrate from Alaska to the waters off Maui, where they mate and calve from December through May. You will be traveling in the peak whale watcjing season!
|
While in Ensenada, Mexico visit two of Ensenada's leading wineries located in the Calafia Valley. Or, play the Bajamar Golf Resort. This spectacular course was designed by Percy Clifford in 1976 has holes reminiscent of Pebble Beach.
